This September we welcome the release of two Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) from the Penn Graduate School of Education (GSE). Whether you have a casual interest in teaching, you are an experienced educator, or somewhere in between, we encourage you to enroll in our two edX courses and learn more about techniques in online and residential teaching.
Course #1: Understanding Classroom Interaction
Launching today, September 19th, Understanding Classroom Interaction teaches learners the fundamentals of guiding, facilitating, and leading successful classroom interaction. In this course, Dr. Betsy Rymes will lead you through examinations and critiques of methods for analyzing interaction in classrooms. Further, she will help you develop tools to build more engaged, effective, and equitable classroom communication. Additional concepts you will explore include types of class participation and their effects; turn‐taking patterns and their functions; question types and their effects on classroom storytelling; and the role of intonation, gesture, and other subtle cues on interaction.
Course #2: Introduction to Online and Blended Teaching
It’s not too late to join Introduction to Online and Blended Teaching, which is entering its second week. This course will teach you about the latest in online teaching and learning. This course will help you create engaging, student-centered, and successful learning environments. More specifically, you will explore the definitions for digital literacies, see how practices in online teaching and learning are changing in the digital age, and examine how to succeed at thoughtfully utilizing technologies to support deeper learning.
This course is taught by Dr. Betty Chandy, Dr. Barbara Kurshan, and Dr. Donna Murdoch as part of the Virtual Online Teaching (VOLT) program at GSE. The VOLT program seeks to equip educators with the skills and knowledge necessary to meet the needs of the 21st century learner.
